Review: Lucky Ron

Lucky Ron claims to have been performing country standards in the Byward Market's Chateau Lafayette for 20 years. I attended my first Lucky Ron show with the Road Hammer on Saturday and it lived up to its billing as genuine home-spun country music. Besides his own stellar material, Ron treated the quart-guzzlers to The Battle of New Orleans, Folsom Prison Blues, and Ghost Riders in the Sky. Ron rivals Dave Dudley himself for trucker songs, rumbling out the best version of Six Days on the Road I have heard. The Chateau Lafayette is as close to a honky tonk as you're going to find in urban Ontario, and the patrons don't disappoint, with the right mix of ham 'n eggers, posers, and in-betweens like the Hammer and I.

As much as we tried, the Hammer and I could not out-do Lucky Ron later that night at the Conroy Pub with Alcohol and As Good As I Once Was.
